Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
I was listening to saturdays 606’s podcast earlier, and there was a scouse promoting idea of Alan Pardew coming in as a replacement for Brendan Rodgers.
It got me thinking about the season Eggy pulled the trigger on AP, and what would have happened if he gave the regime a longer period.
After getting us up (no easy feat in itself) the following season in the prem , was one of the most enjoyable I’ve had over west ham , looking back on paper the squad was not amazing , but he got us playing , Anton Ferdinand was shortlisted for young pfa player of the year!
Then come the slump , the baby Bentley brigade and all that, results dipped , and Pards went.
I know this is hypothetical , and no one as a crystal ball, but lets say that the Curbishley/Zola era was replaced with Pardew remaning at the helm , what would have been the outcome ?
What are you memories from that era , good and bad ..

Also if anyone reads into this being some kind of Billic Bashing . its not .

agree re claret tinted specs

fans wanted him out for large parts of the first two years he was here, essentially we had one great season under him and 2 1/2 pretty awful ones (one of which had a happy ending)

Imagine the row had Allardyce gone to MIllwall and got thumped 4-1 and been very lucky it was only 4?

As regards to the 2006 final, while he got some things spot on that day, the subs he didn't.
Also, Sheringham came on for Etherington towards the end, maybe believe it was for a record aged player or something in the modern era and that, but it didn't stop the ball coming back. A number blame Scaloni losing possession that day leading to Gerrard's equaliser, but there would been indirect impact before that on Teddy's non contribution to the game when he was on.

Re: Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
I think he's a much better manager now than he was when he was with us. He's kearned a lot from his spells at Southampton and newcastle, but he seems to be someone who can keep a juggernaut gathering pace when things are going well but can't change things around to much effect when the wheels come off. People often view his tenure with us through rose tints, but this is how I see it.

He oversaw a period of real instability in the championship, a revolving door of players, but still produced some truly atrocious football with the players at his disposal and somehow dragged us up by the skin of our teeth. We were often dire to watch, and he really blew it against oalace in our first play off final, where he trotted to long balls to Deane and played Mullins at left back

After promotion, he made some really shrewd signings and we had a fantastic season, obviously. The FA cup run was both a high point and biggest heartbreak fir a lot of us, but I will controversially suggest the Parsees tactical nativity here cost us s bit too. Bringing dailly in for a cameo when he thought we'd won already was the wrong decision and he should have ensured reo Coker was following his I structures to stick to Gerrard at the end. We were still robbed by bad sportsmanship from them, something I will never forgive.

The following season we were woeful.much has been made of tevez and mascherano and pards big knowing what to do with them. Personally, I think the only reason only Tevez really played was because we really knew we were creaking files and woukd get in trouble in would be fucked for doing it with 2 players, but possibly get away with one - so played the match winner.

But we were atrocious - morale was clearly low, we had billy big bollocks players thinking theyd made IT after being cup final losers and pards had no idea what to do. He had to go. I don't doubt we'd have gone down had he stayed.

So overall, in 3.5 years in charge, 2.5 of them were pretty awful to watch.

But the pardew who us out there now knows his onions a big better. Would I have him back? Yes. Is he better than bilic? No idea

Tevez, Mascherano
He didn't know what to do with these two when they landed.

One of his attributes was to big up a number of players and get them to play well and believe in themselves, something he is doing well at Palace now.

He's smooth suave and sophisticated.

He openly said at the time he's got unfinished business at West Ham.

Think my favourite stories are those of the players that used to refer to him as 'Chocs' - because if he could've eaten himself he would have!

One of his philosophies was to fine players that went to ground and didnt win the ball.
Mark Noble would be skint now!

Pardew lost the dressing room for non footballing reasons and unfortunately had to go.

His time as manager was probably my most enjoyable as a 27 year old.

That night at Highbury, the Play Off semis, the FA Cup run, battering the fuck out of Wenger, the "we was mugnifcents", Tevez, Mascherano, Benayoun, Ashton and so on and so on....

Gone, but never forgotten!

Re: Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
Memories of his tenure?

THE GOOD: FA Cup final and first game back in the Premier League Vs Blackburn Rovers, was literally on cloud 9 after that game.

THE BAD: Having to watch Danny Gabbidon literally run to the touchline, face the crowd and boot it into row z every time even seemingly when nobody was near him.

THE UGLY: Luke Chadwick

He was sacked at Charlton ten years after he was first appointed at Reading. That's a long time to learn how to become a manager.

Re: Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
I liked Pards but gradually I lost a bit of faith in him as we struggled with a big and presumably expensive squad in Championship.

I think he has probably learnt a lot since managing us but he was out of his depth with us in the latter stages. I guess that was why he got fired. But things move on. I'm happy that Bilic will get us a much better team over the next few years than Pards ever would have done.

Infidel, dream on if you think there's any chance palace will go down with him in charge.

Re: Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
Back then he was not the manager he is now. He's definitely learnt his trade well, but I think his arrogance will always be his worst enemy. I am still not convinced that he will go on to be one of the PL's greatest ever managers (which it seems some on here believe he will).

As good as he is, he does have the ability to self-destruct in calamitous ways. First there was the whole player/players wives thing when with us. Then there was landing in hot water with the FA by visibly calling Pellegrini a "fucking old cunt" on the touchline and followed a few months later by head-butting one of Hull's players (albeit a bit of a storm in a teacup). All seems to be going well for him at the moment and I do wish him well, because he always speaks highly of us and we know how much his time here meant to him. Plus, as a few have said, the FA Cup run and the whole of that first season back overshadows the abysmal second PL season in my eyes.

I like the fact that we always played 2 upfront and we always had another 2 on the bench.

So if we were losing hed bring them on and go for it and wed have 3 or 4 strikers on.

If we were winning he would bring someone on so we still had fresh legs up front.

He made mistakes but i never wanted him to stay.

Good manager who was always destined for bigger things.

Will be england manager one day

Re: Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
Sometimes a manager learns through hardship. Won't regale the story again of my meeting with him in Puerta Banus and the Charlton side that night but there was no sign then he was going to be a good Premier manager. He's learnt and I'm pleased for him.

Re: Alan pardews tenure at west ham , and what if he stayed?
AP was still learning the ropes when he managed West Ham. We got him too early. Now would be an entirely different matter. I think he's becoming a good manager who continues to get better, and would be very pleased to see him back at some point in the future.

Infidel, I think bringing Sheringham on instead of James Collins was his biggest error that day.
